‘Unfriendly’ football game lands Kwakwani youth in court

A friendly game of football at Kwakwani, which eventually ended in a fight, caused one youth to be charged with malicious wounding.

The court heard that on July 21, at Kwakwani, Berbice, Anfernee Clonell, 18, of Kwakwani Berbice River, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Tarique Harris, with intent to maim, disfigure and to cause grievous bodily harm.

Clonell, who appeared unrepresented in court on Friday, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones who had no objections to bail, told the court that on the day in question the accused and the virtual complainant were playing football when an argument ensued between the two. Jones said that in the midst of the argument Clonell cuffed Harris about his body.

The unemployed Clonell, was subsequently placed on $50,000 bail and a bond to keep the peace until the outcome of trial. His matter    was then adjourned to August 18, transferred to the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
