A Pouderoyen man was yesterday placed on $1,020,000 bail after he denied the charge of causing a death by dangerous driving.
The courtroom of Magistrate Judy Latchman heard that on July 28, on the Houston Public Road, Mohammed Rahman, 31, of 10 Small Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, drove his vehicle PSS 4430, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Lisa Khan. Moreover, he was also charged with failing to submit himself to a breathalyzer test when he was stopped by police on the Ruimveldt Public Road. Rahman, a businessman by profession, pleaded not guilty to both of the charges.
Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick, who had no objections to bail, told the court that on the day in question, the accused had attempted to overtake a vehicle on the Houston Public Road when the incident occurred.
According to Rahman’s lawyer, since the death of the young woman, his client has assisted in funeral and wake expenses. The lawyer also mentioned to the court that the family of the deceased did not wish to further the matter in court. He pleaded with the magistrate to grant Rahman bail since he is not a flight risk.
The magistrate subsequently granted the accused $1 million bail on the cause of death charge and $20,000 on the failure to conduct a breathalyzer test offence. The matter was adjourned until August 17.
