A 20-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to 12 months’ jail time, after he admitted to a magistrate that he broke into a shop and stole chicken and other items.
Between July 5 and July 6, at St Ignatius, Central Rupununi, Tiberius Spencer of Sand Creek Village, Central Rupununi, broke and entered the shop of Sharon Ann Fredrick, and stole two boxes of chicken, 23 pounds of pork, 30 pounds of fish and other items, all totalling $166,060. The young man, who appeared in court without legal representation pleaded guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick said that Fredrick who is the owner of the shop in the village secured it on the night of July 5, but when she returned on July 6, she discovered that the door to her shop had been pried open and several of her items were missing.
According to Bostwick, Fredrick made a report at the Lethem Police Station and investigations were later carried out. These led officers to Spencer who is a known character in the area. The prosecutor told the court that while in police custody, Spencer, in the presence of his mother admitted to stealing the items.
Before handing down sentence, Magistrate Judy Latchman reprimanded Spencer. “What you did was a very bad thing. You should try and work for your own things. You cannot just go around stealing things,” she told him.
