Town Clerk Royston King has given the City Engineer’s Department three months to complete full rehabilitation of the Kitty Market and the total bill is estimated at $240m.
According to a press release yesterday from the Mayor and City Council, completion was delayed due to limited funds and materials. So far, the Council has spent approximately $110m in repairs, and it is estimated that it will cost $240m to restore the entire structure. This includes the addition of a western wing covering both the ground floor and the first floor to accommodate the hundreds of applications that the municipality has received from previous and potential stall holders, the release stated.
According to the release, existing stall holders will retain their stalls.
In the upcoming week, the release stated, the Market’s Department will begin interviewing applicants who have a desire to operate at the facility. The new structure would include an Information Technology centre, an area for community activities, grocery, haberdashers, restaurants and a recreational area which should cater to the needs of the local community, the release said.
The release added that the administration is meanwhile contemplating the designs and construction of a double decker mall at “Bourda Green”, Bourda Market, the extension of the northern section of the Stabroek Market and the upgrading of the New Vendors Mall to a three-storey shopping mall.
Also, the Town Clerk has urged vendors to organise themselves into committees which would make representation on their behalf to the Council.
