Better leadership needed in agriculture sector

Dear Editor,

Guyana at this point in time needs better leadership in the agriculture sector, a principal income creator for the nation.  Guyana needs someone in this important sector, who can manage the risk, who is empathetic to the plight of the players in the sector, especially the workers, and who has the ideas and the courage to roll out these ideas in partnership with the stakeholders.

Unfortunately, over the last 15 months it is clear Minister Noel Holder has not crafted the solutions needed for the sector.  Such a situation brings great harm to the Granger administration since the agriculture sector is one of the leading accumulators of foreign currency for the local system.

After 15 months we cannot see the quality of transformation in the agriculture sector expected for the benefit of the people, primarily because of the poor menu of policy initiatives, lack of creativity in new ideas and a total failure to manage the situation to achieve the necessary deliverables. The nation has lost valuable ground in the project to deliver the good life because of this leadership issue in the agriculture sector. What one finds coming out of the office of the Minister of Agriculture is excuse after excuse, which has directly impacted on the performance of the economy. The Minister has to understand that this is about Guyana, and a nation hurts because he is performing at a level that strategically will not unleash the potential of the agriculture sector.

Someone has to bite this bullet before there is further damage to this sector, which has infected the term of President Granger and will bring even greater harm to this term up to 2020.  I am humbly asking President Granger as a Guyanese who believes in the ability of my country to provide the bounty for all its residents, to reconsider this appointment and let us use the opportunity to bring greater transformation to the sector to deliver on the good life.

Yours faithfully,

Sase Singh
