Distance standout, Lionel D’Andrade continues to grab headlines in Trinidad and Tobago for all the positive reasons.
The Guyana/TT-based road runner successfully defended his Emancipation Freedom Run 5K title when the event was staged on August 1st in Sangre Grande.
D’Andrade defended his title in 17:20, while Trinidadians Colin Pereira placed 2nd in 17:30 and Joshua James was 3rd respectively in 18:30.
The lanky D’Andrade was made to work harder this time around, but showed superior tactics to pull away from his rivals with ease to defend his title. A victory in 2017 for D’Andrade will see him take home the challenge trophy.
D’Andrade said experience was key to bringing home the gold. “This year was more competition but experience make me win this evening. I just run and hold with them and then try something and realized they ain’t coming so experience make me win today,” he explained.
D’Andrade won back-to-back races during the long weekend and will compete again in two more races this weekend. The Emancipation Freedom run is in celebration of Trinidad & Tobago’s Emancipation Day holiday. The road race had a turnout of 200 participants running for freedom as they celebrated Emancipation Day.
