Technical Director of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) , Terrence Poole dubbed the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Novices Championship this past weekend as a huge success.
Poole told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the three-night event which culminated on Sunday attracted in excess of 48 pugilists from six gyms and most of the bouts were tightly contested and competitive.
He said that he saw “a lot of potential from the first timers” during the annual competition which is held in honour of Guyana’s first world boxing champion, Andrew Lewis.
When the curtains came down on the fixture at the National Gymnasium, holders, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) retained the Best Gym Award after amassing 19 points.
Republican was second on six while the Rose Hall Jammers (five points) was third.
Welterweight, Joshua Joseph of Republican was adjudged the best boxer of the championship after punching his way to three scintillating victories.
The boxers will now focus on the Lennox Blackmoore Intermediate Championships scheduled for September 2-4 at the same venue.
