The fisherman of Parika, East Bank Essequibo, who chopped his former partner and her mother at Greenwich Park on Wednesday night and then ingested poison, succumbed yesterday morning.
The man, known as ‘Moon,’ died at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH), where he had been admitted.
It was around 10.40 pm on Wednesday last that the man broke into the home and attacked Bibi Shareema, 26, with a mini cutlass used for chopping fish. When her mother, Bibi Shameela, ran to her assistance, he chopped her too.
Shareema sustained injuries to the region of her heart and lungs, while her intestines were exposed. She also sustained open wounds to her wrists, elbows and legs.
She underwent surgery at the George-town Public Hospital on Thursday and was placed on a life-support machine. Her condition is said to be critical.
Her mother, who was badly chopped to her hand, underwent surgery at the WDRH yesterday.
The man, who was dressed only in shorts, escaped after attacking them and police later found his slippers, cap and a half-bottle of rum in the yard.
Shareema’s father, Mohamed Ibrahim, a watchman at Ruby, told Stabroek News that he was at work when his 15-year-old daughter called him crying and told him “mommy and Reema bleeding to death.”
He did not understand what she meant and called her back and as she explained what had happened, he could hear his wife and daughter screaming in pain.
He left his workplace immediately but called on other relatives for help, saying “something serious happen at home.”
His son-in-law broke the gate to enter the yard and they took the women to the hospital.
Ibrahim said the man must have jumped into the yard and would have entered the house by removing three louvre panes from a window in the kitchen.
He then went upstairs to the bedroom where Shareema was sleeping with her three children, aged, 2, 4 and 5, and attacked her first.
Her mother heard her screaming and had gone to her assistance when the man attacked her.
Ibrahim said Shareema shared a one-year relationship with the man. They separated when she became pregnant as he had constantly accused her of infidelity. Her two older children are from a previous marriage.
Ibrahim related that the man would visit the child when he came from sea, but would only give money grudgingly for support after Shareema begged him.
Her father said the man was angry because Shareema refused to rekindle the relationship with him.
