The Guyana Fire Service yesterday afternoon averted what could have been a major fire at the Guyana Post Office building located on Robb Street, Georgetown.
Stabroek News understands that the fire started around 1 pm after a woman, said to be a vagrant, threw a cigarette butt in a section located at the bottom flat of the building.
An eyewitness, Marvin (only name given) said he was at the eastern side of the building, and saw when the woman tossed the cigarette butt. He said he alerted the security guard on duty after smoke was seen coming from the area.
The Guyana Fire Service was contacted and the promptly managed to put out the blaze.
This newspaper understands that the section where the fire started is currently unoccupied. It previously housed a business.
