West Ruimveldt residents want derelict fire trucks moved

Residents of Cactus Street, West Ruimveldt are pleading with the authorities to remove the derelict firetrucks and other vehicles that are parked on the parapet.

Two old firetrucks, an old bus and other mechanical parts have been parked along the road, which is adjacent to the fire station in the area, for some time. Residents are concerned that the trench in the area cannot be cleaned as a result and also about the security risks that the vehicles present.

“I am from Maryland [United States of America] and I used to live here before and I came back and this is what I was greeted by. It’s an eyesore.

This is the first thing you have to see when you look over the road in the morning and it’s really bad,” a visitor told Stabroek News yesterday. The woman, who has been staying in the community for several weeks, said it has become annoying.

She pointed out that not only is it an eyesore during the day, but it is also a security risk at night as the area is usually dark.

“When you come off a bus and you walk through the street, you can’t see anything and it’s usually dark.

Anyone can be hiding in there and jump out and rob you,” the woman pointed out.

There is currently a buildup of vegetation around the derelict vehicles and residents said the trench behind them is usually ignored because of its inaccessibility.

“They just focusing on downtown and not focusing on these other places.

If you want to beautify the city then you have to remember these places too,” the woman added.
