Mandevilla, a tropical beauty commonly called Rock Trumpet, originated in the forest of Brazil and comes from the Apocynaceae family
Most Mandevilla species are also native to Central and South America
Mandevilla was named after a British diplomat and gardener Henry Mandeville, who came across the species in this continent in the 18th century.
Mandevilla was then sent to Europe where new hybrids were developed and spread across Europe and the United States. By the 20th century the United States had developed Mandevilla Crimson Red commonly called Red Riding Hood and this was quickly spreading across Florida where it is warmer and other states. This beauty is an attention grabber; the bright red flowers are just amazing.
Mandevilla is a climber and can be trained on a trellis or against a wall. This showy beauty with dark green glossy leaves and trumpet flowers will last for days.
Plant Mandevilla in well-drained soil in full sun and fertilize with Miracle Gro Bloom Booster every two weeks. It will brighten up your garden and is a highlighter with very dramatic effect for your entrance or courtyard. The yellow, pink and white blooms are also spectacular.
My Mandevilla has adapted well here and although it’s a bit young it’s getting ready to bloom again.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
