(Trinidad Express) Insurance company Colfire has come under fire after one of its employees posted a warning letter he received from the company, chiding him for his “unprofessional” hairstyle.
Maurice Ramirez posted the letter to Facebook along with a photo of himself in a shirt and tie and a short, curly hairstyle.
The letter, signed by the company’s human resources manager, said Ramirez was cautioned about his hairstyle on two previous occasions but failed to adhere to the company’s policy on uniform and dress code.
The letter makes reference to a policy that “hairstyles and hair colours must be conservative. Hair should be kept clean, neat and well groomed.”
It served as a “final warning” to Ramirez, that if he failed to comply, disciplinary action would be taken “up to and including termination of services.”
The posting caused an uproar on social media yesterday with many condemning the company for they said were “discriminatory” policies.
In a brief response yesterday, Colfire chairman Robert Mayers said it was an internal matter and the company’s confidentiality policy did not permit an open discussion in the public domain.
“However, we give the assurance that we will communicate directly with the staff member in accordance with the company’s grievance procedure policy.”
He added: “Colfire denies the damaging allegations that have resulted from the publication of an internal document.”
Ramirez could not be immediately reached for a comment yesterday.
