Guyana’s Aliyah Abrams failed to advance to the semis of the women’s 400m at the Olympic Games in Rio, finishing fifth in her heat at the Olympic Stadium yesterday.
Abrams finished with a time of 52.79 seconds, placing 38th overall out of 57 competitors. However, for the Caribbean, Bahamian Shaunae Miller and Jamaicans Stephenie-Ann McPherson, Christine Day and Shericka Jackson advanced to the semi-finals today.
Miller, the world-leader, was the fourth fastest of the qualifiers in 51.16 as she brushed aside her competition in heat five, easing up considerably over the final metres to finish ahead of Australian Morgan Mitchell.
Abrams’ elimination means that triple jumper Troy Doris is the only athlete left in the Olympics representing Guyana. That competition begins tomorrow.
