Guyana secured dissimilar semi-final berths in the Men and Women’s Team Championship when the Caribbean Senior Squash Championship continued on Friday in Trinidad and Tobago.
In the Men’s Division, Guyana defeated Jamaica 3-2 in their first fixture. Guyana secured a 2-0 lead in the matchup as Richard Chin and Nyron Joseph defeated siblings Lewis and Jonathan Walters respectively.
Chin upset the Men’s Individual champion Lewis Walters 11/2, 12/10, 11/2 before Joseph brushed aside Jonathan Walters 11/6, 11/6, 11/6. Jamaica reduced the deficit in the third match as Alex Arjoon lost to Chris Binnie 11/13, 10/12, 13/11.
The Jamaicans then equalised in the fourth fixture as Jason Khalil lost to Julian Morrison 5/11, 9/11, 9/11. Nonetheless, Guyana avoided a Jamaica comeback win as Kristian Jeffrey defeated Dane Schwier 11/4, 11/13, 11/7, 11/9.
In their second fixture, Guyana lost to the Cayman Islands 3-2. The Guyanese started off poorly as Chin went down to Mark Chaloner 9/11, 11/6, 9/11, 9/11. Cayman Islands doubled their advantage as Joseph lost to Alex Garner 3/11, 9/11, 11/9, 9/11.
Cameron Stafford sealed the win for the Cayman Islands as he defeated Alex Arjoon 6/11, 6/11, 4/11. The Guyanese recorded two important consolation wins as Jason Khalil defeated Julian Jervis 11/2, 12/10, 6/11, 11/7 and Kristian Jeffery downed Jake Kelly 11/7, 11/9, 9/11, 11/9.
Due to the respective results, the group was deadlocked as each team secured one win via a 3-2 margin and a loss by the identical score line. However, following a ‘count back’ to decide the tie breaker, the Cayman Islands and Guyana advanced on net games. Guyana will now oppose Bermuda in the semi-final round.
In the Women’s section, Guyana blitzed Trinidad and Tobago 5-0. Akeila Wiltshire defeated Amy Gillezau 3-1 before Victoria Arjoon brushed aside Marcia Barcat in straight sets 3-0 to make it 2-0.
The contest was sealed in the third fixture as Mary Fung-A- Fat edged Charlotte Knaggs 3-2. Guyana completed the sweep of the final two fixtures as Taylor Fernandes and Larissa Wiltshire defeated Faith Gillezeau and Alexandra Yearwood 3-0 and 3-0 respectively.
Guyana will oppose Barbados today in a matchup which will decide the Women’s title as the two teams have recorded the most points. In the Veteran’s Tourney, Guyana claimed their first win with a 3-1 result over the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
