A taxi driver attached to the Sheriff Taxi service was shot during the wee hours of yesterday morning in an apparent hijacking attempt.
The driver, Ronald Glasgow, 32, of Kitty, is currently a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing the gunshot wound to his hand.
According to Glasgow, it seemed as though his attacker wanted to hijack the vehicle as he made attempts to lead him into a lonely spot in East Ruimveldt.
From his hospital bed, the man recounted his ordeal to Stabroek News. After picking up the passenger from the corner of Light and Lamaha streets, Glasgow said, he proceeded to drop off the passenger at his destination “at the school on Front Road, East Ruimveldt.” He related that the man paid him during the journey but when they arrived at the destination, the passenger requested that he be taken to the next corner.
Glasgow said he refused since it was a lonely spot and a dead end. He explained that the passenger got out of the front passenger seat and turned his back. Within seconds, Glasgow said, he saw the man put his hands at his waist and pulled out a gun.
He said he heard the sound of the gun being cranked and before he could reverse, the man fired a shot in his direction. The bullet hit Glasgow’s hand and he immediately drove off. A second shot was fired and it hit the rear window.
Glasgow said he immediately went to the East La Penitence Police Station and made a report and was rushed to the GPH for medical attention.
Yesterday, he underwent a corrective procedure after suffering broken bones in the hand. Police investigations are continuing.
