Guyana were dethroned as Women’s Team Champions as they lost by a 3-2 scoreline to arch-rivals Barbados in the final yesterday of the Caribbean Senior Squash Team Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Guyanese got off to the worst possible start as Akeila Wiltshire went down to Amanda Haywood 8/11, 4/11, 4/11. Taylor Fernandes equalised for Guyana in the second fixture, downing Muffin Stollmeyer 11/6, 11/5, 11/6.
Barbados responded in equal measure as Karen Meakins blanked Ashley Khalil 11/6, 11/7, 11/5 in the third fixture. However Guyana levelled proceedings once more, with Larissa Wiltshire dismissing Lilanna White 11/6, 11/5, 6/11, 11/8 in the penultimate showdown.
Nevertheless the Barbadians clinched the championship in the final bout as Individual Women’s champion Meagan Best brushed aside Mary Fung-A-Fat 11/7, 5/11, 11/4, 11/5.
On the Men’s side, Guyana defeated the Cayman Islands in the traditional third-place playoff by a 3-2 margin. Jason Ray-Khalil squeaked past Julian Jervis 4/11, 3/11, 12/10, 13/11, 11/8.
Nyron Joseph increased Guyana’s lead as he defeated Alex Fraser 11/7, 2/11, 11/5, 11/8. Cayman Islands pulled one back in the third match as Cameron Stafford crushed Alex Arjoon 11/7, 11/8, 11/3.
However Kristian Jeffrey sealed the outcome in the fourth fixture, defeating Jake Kelly 11/8, 7/11, 5/11, 11/8, 11/7. Cayman Islands recorded a consolation win in the fifth round as Mark Chaloner defeated Richard Chin.
In the Veterans section, Guyana went down to the Cayman Islands 3-2. From the overall results of all three teams, Guyana finished in the third position and will aim to clinch all the accolades when the event moves next year to St.Vincent and the Grenadines.
