Dear Editor,
We were made to believe that the new government is way above board and can do no wrong; that because the cabinet members and a few others are paid super salaries they will not be tempted to be dishonest. That being said, even if they are financially honest they have displayed a great deal of lack of accountability and giving schoolboy excuses hoping they would be believed. I refer specifically to the trip to China and the New GPC brouhaha.
It is high time that the new administration set its standards but this will be hard to come by when the President sides with the culprits and tries to do damage control. A strong leader must display his mettle but must maintain a certain distance from his colleagues. This will allow him space to carry out disciplinary measures when the need arises.
The cabinet members are too cosy in that they will shield, defend and tolerate inconsistencies among colleagues in relation to transparency and accountability.
It is also noted that too much effort and energy are wasted by digging holes to bury the opposition in. ‘Old people seh that when you dig hole fu you mattie, you self does fall in.’
It is very glaring that the present administration is hell bent on discontinuing what was started by the previous administration. Take, for example, the Amaila Fall Hydro project, the Speciality Hospital, the sole sourcing of drugs, etc. Will there ever be continuity in development for the sake of moving forward? Is all this previous planning so bad and only now we are embarking on the good? When will this childish behaviour displayed by our politicians stop? When will the politicians stop looking to score points by pointing out who did what and when? This kind of behaviour is like dogs chasing their own tails.
This present government needs to step back and look at itself, and take into consideration the voices of the people. The populace wants to hear about development and wants to see all the local authorities at the community level in place. Let us be sensible politicians so that we can all get to enjoy the good life.
