KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Leeward Islands opener Tyrone Williams roared to his first century in round five of the one-day phase of the Regional Under-19 Championship here yesterday.
However, his efforts could not prevent Trinidad and Tobago from cruising to a four-wicket win over Leeward Islands at Stubbs Playing Field.
Williams hit a top score of 132 from 139 balls with 13 fours and three sixes, propelling Leewards to 280 for six in their 50 overs.
Williams, who shared in a third-wicket stand of 56 with Kofi James, who contributed an even 50, remains the leading scoring in the tournament with 238 runs.
Opener Keagan Simmons missed his century by a single while anchoring the T&T run chase, facing 96 balls and scoring 12 boundaries and two sixes for his 99.
Brendon Maharaj supported with 51 and Kirstan Kallicharan 43 while Kofi James emerged as the top bowler for Leewards with three for 52.
Meantime, Windward Islands suffered their first defeat; losing to Guyana by 38 runs at Arnos Vale Playing Field.
Guyana recovered from a shaky start to compile 238 for nine from their 50 overs before dismissing the Windwards for 200 with five overs and a ball to spare.
Alick Athanaze dismissed the openers, grabbing two for 35 to rattle the top order and send Guyana reeling on 41 for three.
However, a 96-run stand for the fourth wicket between Keemo Paul and Bhaskar Yadram put Guyana’s innings back on course.
Paul slammed 58 from 64 balls, picking up two fours and five sixes in the process, while Yadram was run out by Johann Jeremiah after smashing four fours in a knock of 35.
Ryan John and Kassim Peltier were the other two successful bowlers for Windward Islands with two wickets each.
Windwards started the chase with a solid 68-run opening stand between Johann Jeremiah and Anil Matthew.
Matthews top scored with 39, Jeremiah 32, while Althanaze and Johnel Eugene contributed 33 and 31.
But the Windwards lost their way approaching the death overs as their last three wickets perished for one run with Paul, Akenie Adams and Kheshram Seyhadan grabbing three wickets each.
Over at Park Hill Playing Field, ICC Americas continues to be the whipping boys of the tournament, succumbing to a nine-wicket thrashing at the hands of Jamaica.
ICC Americas collapsed for 133 in 41.1 overs as Javor Harrison (3-46), Miguel Smith (3-31) and Tyrone Daley (4-14) ran through their line-up, the highlight of which was a top score of 41 from Sagar Patel and 32 from Arjun Patel.
Jamaica lost opener Michael Frew for 40 but a 138 run unbeaten second wicket partnership between Orande Pearson 43 and Jordane Hill 42 carried them to an easy win.
