The membership of the People’s National Con-gress Reform (PNCR) has increased by over 50% since the APNU+AFC coalition, of which the party is a major partner, won last year’s general elections.
According to PNCR General Secretary Oscar Clarke, the party’s membership climbed by more than 4,000, from about 6,000 to over 10,000, since the elections victory.
“In terms of the membership, membership of the party has been increasing since we got into government. It’s over 10,000. It has moved from 6,000 to over 10,000,” Clarke told a news conference yesterday.
However, Clarke voiced his disappointment at the overall functionality of party groups. “What you have happening is membership has increased but functionality of the groups have decreased. You have members of groups but the groups don’t meet. You have a lot of people in the party and so on but the groups not meeting. So what you have to have is the groups meeting. People complain about the functionality, not about the membership. At this [upcoming Biennial] Congress, for example, over 135 groups have submitted delegates. That means that they meet… we are not worried about the membership. We are worried about the functionality,” he added.
He said the lack of functionality means that the party would have to do “a lot more work with them” so they can take up more responsibility.
