Despite suffering an unfortunate back injury, local gladiator, Andrea Smith still managed to finish on the podium at the ongoing Caribbean Powerlifting Championships in St. Croix.
Smith, who had her sights set on rewriting the record books in the squat and dead lift, placed third and snared a bronze medal after having to scale down her lifts in the women’s 63kg Open division. On Tuesday, she squatted 135kg in her first attempt but missed her last two squats. After being forced to lift conservatively, Smith dead lifted 132.5kg and bench pressed 67.5kg.
Guyana’s other two representatives Earwyn Smith and Karel Mars will spring into action today. Smith competing in the 93kg male open category starts at 9:35am while Mars (105kg) will suit up from 13:00hrs.
