Gunplay unfolded yesterday afternoon in North Ruimveldt as police chased down and captured a man who reportedly had a quantity of marijuana in his possession.
A police source told Stabroek News that as ranks were carrying out a routine operation in the area they observed a man carrying a bag. They followed the man and he was seen throwing the bag away, which resulted in police chasing behind him. The police source said the man discharged a round at the police and they returned fire. However, no one was injured during the exchange.
They managed to apprehend the man and retrieve the bag which was found to contain a quantity of cannabis.
When this publication visited the area, residents stood around in groups discussing what had just transpired. One resident, Sean Membrack, said he heard gunshots around 4.30 pm and then saw the police chasing behind a man. He said the police eventually caught the man in an alley. According to Membrack, police were conducting operations in the area all day yesterday, which resulted in the several persons being apprehended. He believed the police operations were as a result of Wednesday’s foiled robbery in the community.
On Wednesday, two men were beaten by a group of persons after they entered the home of a North Ruimveldt resident and attempted to rob him of his valuables.
Both of the men remain patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital under guard.
