A man was yesterday sentenced to three years in prison by Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court for the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Vinod Sancharia, 32, a farmer of Maria’s Plea-sure, Wakenaam Island was found with 222.4 grammes of cannabis on August 15.
According to the police, ranks from the San Souci Police Station received information that Sancharia was travelling from Parika with narcotics in his possession. The ranks went to the Wakenaam stelling where they apprehended him and carried out a search.
The marijuana was found in a bag which he had on his back at the time.
He was arrested and taken to the police station where it was weighed in his presence and amounted to 222.4 grammes.
When the charge was read to him by Magistrate Scarce, Sancharia, who was not represented, pleaded guilty.
He was subsequently sentenced to three years imprisonment along with a fine of $30,000.
