Heavy rainfall forced the rescheduling of the Plaisance Guardians and West Side Ballers Open division matchup when the Turbo Hard-Court Basketball Championships continued at the Plaisance Community Court on Thursday.
The sudden downpour stopped play with 6:34m remaining in the final quarter. At the time of the stoppage, the home side was in control at 52-40.
Nikoloi Smith was the top scorer for the hosts before the abrupt end with 17 points while O’Neil Heywood led the way with 10 points for West Side Ballers.
Also affected by the downpour was the Colts and the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans Open division fixture. That matchup will be rescheduled to another date.
Prior to the stoppage of the opening fixture, the home side got off to the perfect start as they secured the first period, scoring 16 points while restricting their foe to 12 points.
Guardians built on their lead in the second quarter as they outscored the visitors by a 20-12 score line to enter the halftime interval ahead at 36-24.
The hosts maintained their advantage heading into the final period at 49-38 as they were marginally outshot by a 14-13 margin at the end of the third stanza. Guardians then added three points to their total while Ballers added two to their tally before the rain came.
Action in the event is slated to continue at the same venue with another doubleheader. The overall divisional winners of the event will be the teams that win two out of the three stages.
Winner of the opening stage held at the Burnham Court were Ravens and Pacesetters in the Open and u23 sections respectively. The third aspect will be staged at the National Gymnasium outdoor venue.
