Acalypha wilkesiana commonly called Fire Dragon originated in the Pacific Islands and comes from the Euphorbiaceae family.
Acalyphas are tropical shrubs which are best grown outdoor in the full sun. There are many varieties of Acalypha with rich colourful leaves.
Acalypha wilkesiana cv macrophylla originated in Fiji and is one of the most popular varieties with large multi-coloured leaves of red and bronze markings. The main stem of this plant grows
erect with many branches of oval-shaped, tooth-edged leaves.
Acalypha wilkesiana was named after American Naval Officer Charles Wilkes who came across the plant while on an expedition in the Pacific Islands in the 18th century.
Plant Acalypha in well drained Potting Soil. Acalyphas like a good drink of water daily, so make sure that yours gets an adequate supply of water during the hot, dry season. Prune the plant to keep it attractive. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food every two weeks.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
