Dear Editor,
Old students of Berbice High School (BHS) are refurbishing and upgrading their alma mater as the learning institution celebrates its centenary on September 5. Week-long activities are planned which get underway on August 31. The former students have undertaken a series of activities which will upgrade and enhance their alma mater. The sanitary block is being rehabilitated, the classrooms are being repainted, the grounds are being landscaped, and the concrete fencing being replaced with assistance from Regional Chairman David Armogan and his deputy Bhadase Poonai, an old boy of the school. Former students, Wannetta Hope Phillips, Elsa Blackman and Shirley Clarke have provided equipment to the Home Economics Department; Derek Foster associated with Automotive Arts chain of stores in the Caribbean and Dr Puran Singh will provide the funding for various memorabilia (mugs, pens, pencils, tee shirts). The Singh brothers of Palmyra (Tulsi, Mark, Puran, Chhatarpal, Lallbahadur and Mohan) continue to be of great assistance to the school. They have shipped 500 chairs to be used in the auditorium. In addition Dr Tulsi Singh has prepared an impressive booklet of the great institution which will be distributed to the former students.
The learning institution commenced on September 5, 1916 under the home of Rev J A Scrimgeour. C A Pugsley was the first headmaster of the school which has shaped the lives of thousands; scores have excelled and are living all over the planet.
A large number of the old students who live overseas will journey to New Amsterdam for the celebrations which will be attended by President David Granger and Minister of Education, Rupert Roopnaraine. The programme includes meet and greet, a symposium, sight-seeing trips and sporting activities being planned by Mohan Harnanan, an old student and former Berbice cricketer.
Yours faithfully,
Oscar Ramjeet
