The man who was shot by police on Friday night outside of the Camp Street Prison is still to be identified.
Acting Crime Chief Hugh Jessemy said last night that the man has not been identified and his body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
On the night in question, man allegedly attacked a police officer after he was approached about his disorderly behaviour.
As a result, he was fatally shot by a policeman who was guarding the prison at corner of Camp and D’Urban streets.
Reports stated that the man was shot once to the lower abdomen and immediately taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed while receiving medical attention.
Stabroek News had reported that early Friday evening the man went to the back of the prison at John and D’Urban streets where he began to behave disorderly, throwing down some steel barriers, in the presence of the policemen guarding the perimeter of the prison.
Police said in a statement, “He was taken into custody by ranks of a police patrol, but subsequently returned and continued the said behaviour and action, in front of the prison.” At this point, the constable discharged a round which hit the man.
The police’s Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting investigations into the incident
