The main suspect in the murder of 14-year-old Akeem Grimmond is expected to be charged in a Berbice court today.
According to Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam, the case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali Hack for legal advice.
Acting Crime Chief Hugh Jessemy told Stabroek News that a recommendation was made that the suspect face a murder charge.
According to a police source, the suspect continues to maintain his innocence, in the face of a report from his wife that he told her he had killed the teen and that they should buy coffee and biscuits and take it to the teen’s family for the wake.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was also informed that a pair of flip flops was found at the crime scene. Ryan Persaud, the child’s father, has confirmed that the slippers do not belong to his son.
Grimmond of Lot 53 Section B, Number 61 Village, had gone missing on Saturday last. On Monday afternoon, his body was discovered with multiple chop and stab wounds in a drain some 300 feet away from his home.
A post-mortem examination conducted on Tuesday revealed that the child died from suffocation. Grimmond leaves to mourn his father, mother, sister and other relatives and friends. Commander Amsterdam had visited the family of the teen to express his sympathy and promised that justice will be served.
