After partnering with the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) last year to box off several successful tournaments, the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) will once again brand and sponsor an upcoming competition, which will be staged on Sunday.
In excess of 40 amateur pugilists will compete for medals in the DDL under-16 competition from 13:00hrs at the National Gymnasium.
The tournament, which is sponsored under DDL’s Pepsi brands, is scheduled to attract Simon Pures from Young Achievers, Carryl Boxing Gym, Essequibo Boxing Gym, Harpy Eagles, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Rose Hall Jammers and the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym.
“We have boxers coming from all three counties and we expect a great day of action,” said GBA’s Technical Director, Terrence Poole yesterday.
Poole also told Stabroek Sport that standout pugilists like lightweight, Omar Pollard, Joel Augustin (welterweight), Shaquancy Wright (80-84lbs) and Shemar Bumbury (100-105) will be in action.
Poole, who also encouraged boxing fans to attend the competition, reminded the media that the event is geared for boxers 16 years and under. Notes: Weigh in and medical will be conducted at 10:0hrs at the same venue. Essequibo Boxing Gym is the defending champion of the championship.
