Workers of the Russian-owned Bauxite Company of Guyana Incorporated (BCGI) will now have tax exemptions on their overtime, according to Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence.
Lawrence made the announcement yesterday following a meeting with the bauxite company.
According to the minister, the biggest concern expressed by the workers was that their overtime payments were not subject to tax exemption. “Workers did enquire along with the Personnel Manager about the tax exemption on overtime,” she noted.
“I did meet with the Minister of Finance and I can assure you upon his return you will be hearing from him and the workers. This is a done deal. The workers will be given their tax exemptions on overtime,” she said to resounding applause from the team.
Yesterday, ministry officials met with representatives from the company to resolve a number of complaints presented by workers after a visit to the company’s mines last Thursday.
