An APNU+AFC member of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two was assaulted yesterday by a council worker after he inquired about the quality of clean-up work that was being done.
Regional Chairman Davenanad Ramdat told Stabroek News that the incident occurred around 9.30 am yesterday in the RDC compound.
He was told that the matter was reported to the Anna Regina Police Station and that it was recommended that the worker, Rockliffe George, be arrested and taken to court, for slapping APNU+AFC councillor Naitram.
He said George, a retiree who was “handpicked” to oversee the drainage and irrigation works, became annoyed when Naitram asked him about the quality of the work that was being done.
Ramdat said that “the RDC would have been raising serious concerns with regards to drainage and irrigation over the last months” and that it was necessary for Naitram to make the inquiries.
He said too that Naitram is also the coordinator for agriculture, “so in his capacity he was enforcing better quality of work.”
The chairman also expressed concerns about “handpicked officers in the region. They are undermining the quality of the public service and preventing legitimately appointed officers from doing their work.”
Ramdat said “the action is highly condemned by the RDC” and also cited examples of other handpicked workers who do not function efficiently.
