The night that local boxing fans have been waiting for is finally here.
Fight fans get ready, the ‘Bad Intentions’ card is on tonight at the Giftland Mall.
In the headliner of the highly anticipated five-fight all pro event, it will be experience versus youth as 42-year-old former world champion DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley (47-27-1, 26 KO’s) takes on 24 year-old Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves (8-1-2, 5 KO’s) .
The pair will match gloves for the WBC FECARBOX lightweight title.
HIGHLY EXPERIENCED
Corley boasts a record of 47 victories, 27 losses, and one draw, and he has been inside the ring with many world-class boxers, including Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah. He lost to those boxers, but there is no doubt as to his capabilities.
The wily Corley is a smart boxer, and he has shown throughout his long career so far that he does just what is necessary to win. He is not only skillful, however, but as shown in his bout against Revlon Lake, he also has power. In that bout in May, ‘Chop Chop’ knocked out Lake in 55 seconds.
At the weigh-in last night at the Pattensen edifice, Corley who won this year’s Contender Series in Jamaica made his intentions known. “I came here to win and that’s exactly what will happen, I play chess, not checkers.”
`The Cobra’ on the other hand is most deadly when backed into a corner and cannot wait to strike tonight.
“I respect my veteran opponent, he had speed and power, it will be a good fight but I am also looking to win and I will.”
Both fighters weighed in under the lightweight limit of 135. A ripped Gonsalves tipped the scale at 133 while Corley weighed in two pounds lighter.
Meanwhile, tonight;s undercard features a light heavyweight battle involving Kelsie George and Charwin Estwick (four rounds), an eight-round middleweight matchup involving Mark Austin and Jamaican, Richard Holmes (the runner up of the Contender Series) and some fresh talent. Debutant, Anthony Narine will lace it up against Keeve Allicock. There will also be a lightweight rematch involving Imran Khan and Quincy Gomes. Bell time is 20:00hrs. See you there.
