A post-mortem examination has revealed that the mother of 9 who succumbed after being sent away from the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) without scheduled surgery for her leg, died from cardiac arrest.
Akola Wayne, 41, of 247 Melanie Damishana Public Road, East Coast Demerara, had gone to the hospital last week Saturday with a broken leg. Her family said her leg was strapped with cardboard and she was given pain killers and told to return on Monday for surgery. On Monday, after waiting for hours, she was seen by a doctor and told to return the next day. No explanation was offered for why the surgery was not being done. Later on Monday, Wayne appeared to be very ill and her family took her back to the hospital where she died.
The PME was conducted on Friday by Dr Vivekanand Bridgemohan.
When Stabroek News contacted Wayne’s relatives on Friday, they confirmed that they were told she died from cardiac arrest and that this was due to her not getting the treatment for her leg on time and poor circulation of blood in her body.
The GPH had launched an immediate investigation into Wayne’s death on Monday. Contacted, the GPH Public Relations Officer Tianna Graham said investigations are still ongoing.
