Chess team to Baku gets sponsorship from Jones, Bond

Director of Sport Christopher Jones and Attorney-at-Law James Bond yesterday made timely donations to the Guyana delegation scheduled to participate at this year’s Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan from September 1 – 14.

According to a release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) the delegation received “a considerable donation from the National Sports Commission, compliments of Christopher Jones.

“Attorney-at-Law James Bond also came onboard with sponsorship, giving a sizable amount to assist the team with their travel expenditure.”

Guyana will be represented at the 42nd Olympiad by a six-member male team of Candidate Masters Anthony Drayton, Taffin Khan and Ronuel Greenidge while Haifeng Su, Roberto Nero and Candidate Master and Coach Wendell Meusa are the other members.

The women’s team will be led by Women’s Candidate Master Maria Varona Thomas with the other members being Jessica and Julia Clementson, Sheriffa Ali and Yolander Persaud.

According to the release, Jones commended the team for its efforts to gain corporate sponsorship and said that he was heartened by the generous response from companies such as Somwaru Travel Service, Kings Jewelry World, Dr Sengupta and Associates, Hardware Depot, Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and William Walker of Oasis Café.
