Town Clerk Royston King has stated that the city is willing to meet with the newly-formed Guyana Market Vendors Union, once it provides necessary documentation to verify its legitimacy.
Officials of the union, which was formed on July 28, have said that they have sent two written letters to the Town Clerk for discussions but have received no response.
In one of the letters, dated August 19th, the union indicated to King its intention to engage City Council in a meeting to introduce its executive and discuss several issues, including the seizing of goods, the city’s services to vendors and the relationship between vendors and the city constabulary.
The letter stated that the union also wanted to work out an understanding for the protocol between itself and the City Council.
However, King pointed out yesterday that a letter was sent to the union and it included a request for the union to provide the legal documents, including constitution, registration and article of association, the names and positions of office bearers, the methods used to select the office bearers, the vendors that are being represented by the union, and the agreement between the members and the union.
The letter from King, which was sent on August 25th, indicated that the City Council was requesting the documents so as to verify the union’s legitimacy, to set the context and content of engagement between the city and the union and for official records.
However, President of the union Eon Andrews told Stabroek News yesterday that he had not received the letter. He added that he will be sending another letter to the City Council on Monday that will address the issues that the union has with it. Andrews also indicated that when the union sent its first letter to the city administration, it had contained the union’s registration and also its goals.
He said the next letter will be sent on Monday and if no response is received by the end of the week, the union would have to decide on the appropriate actions to take.
