Guyana’s national men’s team yesterday defeated Barbados and St Lucia to qualify for the semi-finals of the 59th Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships being held at the Pabellón de Tenis de Mesa del Parque del Este, Dominican Republic.
The youthful men’s team of former national men’s singles champion Nigel Bryan, 21 years and under champion and Caribbean junior bronze medallist Shemar Britton, national junior champion Kyle Edghill and Elishaba Johnson, blanked Barbados and St Lucia 3-0 in group matches.
Against Barbados, Bryan defeated Tyrese Knight 3-2, Britton stopped Marcus Smith 3-0 and Elishaba Johnson won against Kristian Doughty 3-2.
Doughty is the most experienced player in the team having represented Barbados at the Caribbean Championships in St Lucia three years ago while Knight and Smith are newcomers to the men’s team.
Coming up against St Lucia yesterday afternoon with a semi-final berth on the line, Bryan defeated Adrian Albert 3-1, Britton won from Omarie Ferdinand 3-1 and Edghill stopped Andrew Daniel 3-0. The team will play the Dominican Republic this morning to see which team will top the group.
The other group comprises Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Martinique and Curacao.
The top two teams in each group will contest the semi-finals.
