The acting Police Commissioner must be commended for his historic speech, the like of which no other Police Commissioner has ever given. It was message to the nation, not only to the police. There is overwhelming support by most decent citizens for this open, honest and frank speech by Commissioner (ag) Ramnarine, who should have been appointed to this position before.
No one has ever been so bold as to tell the policemen and women in this country that they must stop harassing the citizens of Guyana and behave like true protectors of the nation. Citizens must call for a system to be put in place to catch rogue cops and teach them a lesson. Commissioner (ag) Ramnarine has brought new and inspiring ideas and actions to the police force that will see the furtherance of good policing through our dear land of Guyana.
The Post PPP administrations through their political interference totally corrupted the police force and the Guyana Defence Force and other ancillary security agencies in the country. The citizens want to see professional policing and an end to the current abuses and authoritarian measures deployed by a significant number of policemen and women. Our police behave in a brutal and crude manner, resorting to all kinds of demeaning tactics to get an increase in their daily income. They fleece the public at large and condone the blatant disregard for the laws of Guyana when they should be the custodians of them.
It is under this coalition government led by President David Granger that these changes in attitude and openness are taking place, and much more will happen to clean up the mess left by the PPP and some of their corrupt business friends. There are active supporters of this coalition government who are working tirelessly for fundamental changes and against the advocates of an old corrupt system. The citizens were asked by the President of Guyana to hold all public officials’ feet to the fire.
