A porter was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in jail after he admitted to snatching a woman’s money out of her hands just as she exited a city ATM.
Orlando Klass, of 181 Charlotte Street, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess on the charge that on September 6, at Wellington Street, he stole $75,000 from Denise Griffith.
Klass pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to the facts presented by the prosecutor, on the day in question around 3.45 pm, Griffith exited Scotiabank and had the cash in her hand when Klass snatched the money and ran away.
A member of the Guyana Defence Force, who was standing nearby, gave chase behind Klass and apprehended him.
When a search was conducted on Klass, the money was found in one of his pockets.
During the hearing yesterday, Klass apologised to Griffith and the magistrate told him that he should not steal a person’s hard-earned money.
Prior to sentencing him, Magistrate Bess said that he took into consideration the fact that Klass did not waste the court’s time, his guilty plea and the fact that he was remorseful.
