Selina Ramotar, who survived being stabbed almost a dozen times outside of her David Street, Kitty home, has been granted a restraining order against the man charged with attempting to kill her after she came under attack once more on Wednesday.
A frightened Selina Ramotar told Stabroek News that she had to return to the courts yesterday for a restraining order after a rock was lobbed at her as she sat in a parked vehicle outside her home on Wednesday night.
Ramotar said because she did not get a clear view of the person, she does not want to come out and say it was Uttanpad Sewnarine, who is charged with attempting to murder her, and instead she has sought the protection of the court as was advised by the police.
Sewnarine was charged with attempted murder on July 12th this year after he allegedly stabbed Ramotar upward of ten times outside her home. She was left near death due to stab wounds that were inflicted to her chest, legs, abdomen, thighs, and back.
With the help of her family, particularly her mother, Ramotar is still undergoing physiotherapy because of severity of the wounds she sustained. In particular, she suffered severe injury to her right hand, which sustained damage to many nerves and veins.
Sewnarine was remanded to prison after he was charged but shortly after he secured his release on bail from the High Court.
Recounting the events of the attack on Wednesday, Ramotar said that she had just pulled up in front of her home with a friend when there was a power outage in the area.
She said she decided to continue sitting in the passenger side of the car, talking with her friend, when she was startled by the sound of the rock landing on her side of the car window. She said she turned around screaming to see, with the aid of the light from a passing car, a man riding away.
She said she and her friend continued screaming and subsequently ran out of the car and into the yard as neighbours were alerted and rushed to their aid. She said that as terrified as she was, her relatives assisted in getting her to the police station, where a report was made. It was then that an officer advised that she go to the court for a restraining order against the man.
Magistrate Leron Daly yesterday granted the restraining order, prohibiting Sewnarine from coming within 500 feet of Ramotar.
Ramotar’s sister and mother are praying that the restriction will be enough to keep the man away from her since they too worry about her safety. “My sister has to every day be alert to her surroundings and that can cause anyone to be paranoid,” Ramotar’s sister, Sunita, told this newspaper.
“It give me a scare and my granddaughter, who is only eight-years-old. I am worried about my daughter and as a mother it is not a good feeling knowing every time my child goes out something could happen to her. It is not a good feeling,” her mother added.
