Victoria Kings came from behind to defeat Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph 2-1 when the East Coast of Demerara zone of the National Milling Company (Namilco) Thunderbolt Flour U17 National Championships continued yesterday.
Staged at the Melanie Community ground, Omari Glasgow gave BV the lead as he found the back of the net in the 22nd minute with a right foot strike to the right side.
However, Victoria Kings responded in equal measure 15 minutes later when Kareem Josiah scored under fortuitous circumstances.
Josiah rifled a shot past the custodian from inside the area after the ball struck the official and fell into his path.
The come-from-behind result was sealed in the 59th minute through a Jeremiah Bowman right foot shot from inside the penalty box. Eventually Kings held on to seal the win but not before being reduced to 10 players as Simon Jones was sent off for a dangerous challenge in the 89th minute.
Victoria Kings walked away with the vital three points while the losing team left empty handed. In another encounter, Plaisance and Ann’s Grove battled to a 1-1 result in the earlier affair.
Antwain Thomas gave Ann’s Grove the lead in the 23rd minute before Jaheem Hinds equalized for Plaisance with a 48th minute conversion. With the result, both teams walked away with a point.
Over at the Mahaicony ground in the Berbice zone, No. #5 Village based outfit Monedderlust FC overcame Litchfield Nuggets 3-1. Brentnol Frank gave Monedderlust the lead with a goal in the 20th minute.
The cellar occupants fired back through Thorne Pompey who netted in the 26th minute. Despite both teams creating chances, the matchup remained unchanged entering the halftime interval.
However, Monedderlust was able to take control of the contest in the second stanza as Romello Johnson scored twice in the space of three minutes.
Johnson made his presence felt as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, directing his effort into the right side in the 65th minute. The hard-fought contest was clinched in the 68th minute as Johnson bagged his second.
With the win, Monedderlust climbed into the fifth position on eight points while the losers remain in the cellar on one point. The event will resume on Saturday and Sunday in both zones at the venues.
