Guyana’s women’s team at the International Chess federation (FIDE) 32nd annual Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan won their second match but the men’s team, with top player Anthony Drayton absent lost to Macau in ninth round action yesterday.
Guyana’s Maria Varona-Thomas continued her impressive showing on board one by defeating fellow Women Candidate Master Gloria Sukhu while Jessica Clementson on board two secured an impressive draw against the highly rated Women FIDE Master Hilda Vukikomoloa.
However Yolander Persaud lost to Cydel Terubea in their board three clash while Sheriffa Ali again played well on board four defeating Tanvi Prasad to seal the win.
The team’s 10th round match will be against Barbados.
Meanwhile, despite an impressive win on board one by Taffin Khan and a draw on board three from Haifeng Su, Guyana’s male team lost to Macau by one and a half points to two and one half in their ninth round encounter yesterday.
Khan on board one defeated fellow Candidate Master Hui Li, Ronuel Greenidge on board two lost to Tou Seng Ip. Su drew with Herman Hou-Meng Ho and Roberto Neto lost to Seak Hin Leong on board four.
The team’s 10th round match will be against San Marino.
