When the final bell chimed at this year’s Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate Championships on Sunday night at the National Gymnasium, Julius Kesney and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) took home the marquee trophies.
After three nights of fistic fury, Kesney, of the Rose Hall Jammers Gym, was awarded the coveted best boxer trophy while the GDF snared the best gym accolade.
The Berbician, fighting in the bantamweight division, boxed his way to the award by unanimously defeating his opponents, Orin Rodrigues, Anthony Patterson and Courtney Lynch.
While Kesney took the top honors in the elite category, Keevin Allicock of Harpy Eagles, was adjudged the best boxer in the youth division.
GDF tallied 22 points to march away with the gym award while Republican Gym ended on six. Third was the Rose Hall Jammers with two points.
The championships which featured a total 29 bouts, 55 boxers, (females included) and nine gyms competing for trophies and bragging rights was a successful one despite the lack of attendance and lucrative corporate sponsorship.
Named after Guyana’s first Commonwealth boxing champion, the fixture is seen as an avenue for spotting and harnessing the talent of the young boxers who could potentially become future world champions.
