An Albouystown teenager alleged to have inflicted harm on his friend using a cutlass, was granted bail by a city court yesterday.
Two months after the alleged incident, Malakai Nelson, 18, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on Kareem Christopher. The event in question, which Nelson pleaded not guilty to, was said to have taken place on July 22nd.
The prosecutionโs facts stated that the two had been involved in an argument, during which the defendant picked up a cutlass and dealt Christopher several lashes and chopped him to the back of the head.
Prosecutor Sophia Sardinha objected to bail based on the nature of the offence and the punishment attached, stating that because the defendant knows the victim, he may interfere with him.
Bail was nevertheless granted to the teen by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the sum of $150,000, along with a bond to be on good behaviour until completion of the trial. He was also ordered not to venture within 50 feet of the victim until the trial has ended.
Nelson will make his next court appearance on October 17th.
