Dear Editor,
I refer to the report in the Tuesday, September 13 edition of Stabroek News on the casino robbery accused alleging victimization at Timehri Prison.
My son called and informed me that he is sleeping in shackles on both hands and feet and to date he has not been taken to the Georgetown Hospital.
I visited the Timehri Prison and spoke to the Officer in Charge Deo Gyandat in the presence of Prison Officer Mr Huntley. When I enquired about sleeping in shackles the OC informed me that he is not violating any rules.
When I asked about him receiving the medical attention that had been instructed by the magistrate he said that the magistrate did not write anything on the case jacket, although the information is on the case jacket.
According to the information that my son was seen by a doctor and admitted to the Georgetown hospital, I would like Mr Gyandat to produce the medical records of this prisoner’s admission and his discharge from the medical institution. Presently he is still urinating blood.
Regardless of the choices people make they are still human beings, and are innocent until proven guilty. Even if found guilty it is not for the prison system to victimize people when they are outspoken .
I would be grateful to whoever is in charge of the prison system to look into this inhuman act being meted out to this prisoner.
Yours faithfully,
Pamela Griffith
