Dear Editor,
It is good to have an apology from Pandit Deodatt Tillack, about the insensitive comments he made regarding our Amerindian people.
Had he been an ordinary citizen, I would have cared less, knowing we Guyanese are fond of making callous and insensitive remarks about other ethnic groups. But when it comes to religious leaders doing the same, it is a cause for much concern. At the inter-faith gathering, he was given an opportunity to utter things that would foster peace and unity in our divided nation, but instead he used the occasion to say things that hurt the sensibilities of others, promoting more distrust and disunity.
Realising the folly he has done, he is now trying to make amends and this is quite welcome.
Yours faithfully,
Stephen Ashby
