LONDON, CMC — Discarded two-time Twenty World Cup-winning captain, Darren Sammy, has been named to lead Cricket United XI against Surrey All Stars in a celebrity charity game at Kia Oval here today.
The Yorkshire Tea20 Charity Challenge will bring together Sammy with a host of current and former players in a game that raises for funds for three charities — Lord’s Taverners, Chance to Shine and PCA Benevolent Fund.
Monies go towards helping young children develop in the game and towards players heading into retirement.
Sammy will captain the Cricket United XI which includes Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, Pakistani all-rounder Yasir Arafat and former England Test star, Monty Panesar.
The side will be managed by noted former England Test captain Michael Vaughan.
The 32-year-old Sammy, unceremoniously axed by selectors five months after guiding West Indies to their second T20 World Cup title last April, said it was an honour to lead the celebrity side.
“It’s always a great feeling when you are asked to captain any team,” St Lucia Sports online quoted the all-rounder as saying. “It tells you that your leadership skills doesn’t go unnoticed.”
Surrey All Stars will be led by former England player Adam Hollioake and include former England star Kevin Pietersen and India’s Harbhajan Singh.
