Following a high volume of complaints from city residents and businesses over its poor service since resuming garbage collection, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has rehired one of the firms it had dropped to once again handle the job in the central business district.
Puran Brothers Disposal Inc would now be responsible for collection in the central business district in the city once daily.
When Stabroek News contacted Managing Director of Puran Brothers Disposal Kalesh Puran for confirmation, he said he could not comment at the time.
However, M&CC spokesperson Debra Lewis told Stabroek News that the decision was taken after Mayor Patricia Chase-Green expressed dissatisfaction with the garbage collection service provided by the city.
Mayor Chase-Green, during last the statutory council meeting, suggested the city consider re-hiring the private garbage collection services, from which the city pulled several contracts due to its indebtedness.
Her comments came in wake of frequent complaints by residents and businesses about the city’s poor collection operations.
About a month ago, the municipality assumed responsibility from Puran Brothers and Cevons Waste Management for garbage collection in Alberttown, Queenstown, Cummingsburg, Kingston, East Ruimveldt, North and East La Penitence, Lamaha Springs and Lamaha Park, and North and South Ruimveldt, and the main commercial districts.
Lewis explained that garbage collection in the business area would return to the twice daily collection schedule.
“Workers from the city would collect once daily and workers from Puran Brothers would also collect once daily,” Lewis explained.
