A woman was yesterday charged criminally with the assault of an eight-year-old, whom she is accused of slapping after he was involved in a fight with her son.
Sherry Mingo, 42, a secretary at Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) appeared before city magistrate Faith McGusty on the charge that she committed the offence on September 21st.
Mingo, of 90 Sideline Dam, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to the prosecution’s case against Mingo, the eight-year-old saw the defendant’s son hit another student after he fell while running a race.
The eight-year-old then began to laugh and the defendant’s son approached him and accused him of laughing, resulting in a fight.
It was at this time that Mingo allegedly walked into the school compound and dealt the young child a slap across his left cheek, leaving an imprint of her hand.
Police officials were later summoned and Mingo was arrested.
Mingo was later granted $10,000 bail by the magistrate, who also adjourned the matter to October 14th.
