A decision in the trial of former health minister Dr Bheri Ramsaran, who is charged with using insulting language to women’s rights activist Sherlina Nageer, has once again been deferred after his legal team petitioned the Court of Appeal for a temporary stay order, pending an appeal of a failed bid to have the case thrown out.
The decision was set for yesterday at the Whim Magistrate’s Court after Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the last court date placed emphasis on the fact that the matter has dragged on long enough and that she will be forced to make a decision whether both parties were present or not. Ramsaran had missed previous court dates due to illness.
However, the hearing was yesterday adjourned until November 21.
Ramsaran’s legal team had previously petitioned the High Court with a no-case submission in order for the matter to be thrown out at the Magistrate’s Court. However, it was overruled. Ramsaran’s lawyers believed that the decision was “inaccurate,” since according to them they had enough legal grounds for a no-case submission to be accepted.
Ramsaran, who is currently a PPP/C parliamentarian, is accused of using insulting language against Nageer in April, 2015 outside of the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
