Kitty Market is scheduled to be reopened on November 1, Town Clerk Royston King told city councillors yesterday.
Speaking at the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) statutory meeting, King said that 65 per cent of work has been completed and round-the-clock work was ongoing to complete the remainder in time for the deadline.
The building has been repainted and work is currently ongoing on the bottom flat. According to King, the meat and fish section of the market would be air conditioned. He said that the initial plan was to air conditioned the entire flat, but due to financial constraints the administration decided to restrict air conditioning to the meat and fish section.
The remodelled design of the market aims to compete with supermarkets, the town clerk said, adding that extractor fans and other means of ventilation were to be installed for vendors and shoppers’ comfort.
The Kitty Market had long been in a dilapidated state and in 2013 the Guyana Fire Service listed it among the derelict buildings in the city that were fire hazards. It is being renovated at an estimated cost of $240 million.
The upper flat of the market has been remodelled to accommodate a rates office and a municipal clinic. The city administration is also planning to decentralize other services to serve constituents in that area.
