Police are preparing to send their file on the September 15 pit bull attacks at Leonora, West Coast Demerara for legal advice, according to acting Divisional Commander Leslie James, who says an autopsy confirmed that the deceased in one of the cases died due to injuries he sustained as a result.
James told Stabroek News that they are treating the three attacks that occurred as one case. He pointed out that the deceased man, who was previously unknown, was identified by his brother as Bashkar Chandar, 52, of Section ‘C’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.
An autopsy gave his cause of death as multiple injuries due to canine attack.
Marcelline Basdeo-Small, the owner of three pit bulls which are suspected to have mauled the man to death, has been released on $100,000 bail pending the outcome of the investigation.
On the day of the attack, Ramanand Bhikam, 62, of Stewartville Housing Scheme, and Wilbert Adams, of Cornelia Ida, and the deceased Chandar were reported to have been separately attacked between 3am and 5am.
Adams, who is an employee of the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s Uitvlugt Estate, had reported he was circled by the dogs and had to use a piece of wood he pulled out from a fence nearby to protect himself.
Bhikam, a security guard, had related to this newspaper that he managed to escape with minor injuries after he armed himself with a cutlass and fended off the dogs.
